Comments:Without wanting to state the obvious..... we really must have an EDZELL Base re-union again some time soonish - given the Fantastic success of the recent re-union....(but not too soon)... reason being none of us are getting any younger... especially the crew from the "Start-up" of Edzell in the 1960s. Perhaps the next re-union could be 2005 ? Why not post your views on this guestbook about when you'd like to come over to Scotland for the next one! It can't do any harm !! Many of you missed it. I had the extreme privilige to meet those fantastic CTs I worked alongside in the mid / late 90s. But many of you were not able to attend.. There were some folks that I would have hugged all nite, had they been over... but they could not make it... so instead of another 5 years... how about another 3 years ?? Bravo Zulu to all Edzellites... and let's hear your views. From John in Brechin.

Comments:Christine, son Joel, and myself enjoyed a wet but beautiful month of June 2002 in Scotland. Joel, born in 1987, while I was stationed at RAF Edzell, got to meet his godparents for the first time; it was love at first sight!Several hours were spent hiking along the North Esk above and below the Shakin Brig; Joel loved it! Spent time with old friends in Kirkcaldy, Brechin and down in England. It was as though we had never left, not 15 years past! We traveled some 3000 miles plus while there and never tired of the beauty of the countryside. A memory album is now under construction. Because schools start in early August here in Seminole County, Florida and Chris and I are both teachers, there was no way we could attend the latest reunion. Hope all attendees enjoyed every minute!

Comments:Enjoyed the Reunion and getting back after almost 30 years. It seems I didn't run into many other lower enlisted r-branchers at the reunion. But seeing the base before it gets redeveloped was enjoyable. All the early 70's buildings were still intact. The Marine admin and barracks still stood. The chapel was there, and had been added to in the later years. The Gangway club and the chow hall and medical buildings were still there. It was strange not to see the Wollenweber around the comm building. The path across the field to the comm building was still there. Wonderful memories. Much appreciation to th Demech's and Mrs. Walker for their efforts. When I got back I surfed the internet and found e-mail addresses for Phil Dorsett and Chuck Truitt, both Marines at Edzell in the early 70's. Anyone else who was there in the early 70's, send me a note.

Scotland is still as beautiful as ever and the people are still the most friendly and welcoming in the world. My wife Carol is from Arbroath. Retired from Corry in June 2000 (30 years). we still live in Pensacola, but I am currently working as an afterschool coordinator at Vinton County Junior High School in southern Ohio where I was born and raised. I am also helping take care of my elderly parents after being gone for 30+ years. Saw a lot of names from my many times at Edzell and brought back alot of memories. I will try and get in touch with some of you. Was not able to make the reunion as had to be back to get ready for another school year. Look forward to hearing from you all.

I was lucky enough to meet my old Royal Navy Buddies and fortunate enough to speak with some old buddies from the USN and also people that only know me from the "Edzell Connection" web site and my own Edzell web site. There were around 300 old and new friends who danced and talked the night away. The party will continue at the Montrose Highland Games tommorrow.... Hello to all you folks who could not make it.

Comments:Greetings. I was the last serving Legalman at NSGA Edzell from 1994-1997 and Edzell was also my "twilight" tour of duty before retiring on October 1, 1997. I worked for a very literate and competent JAG Corps Officer, Lieutenant Kevin M. Kelly. Serving at Edzell and living in Scotland were the best years I served in uniform. It is my goal to revisit the people and sights of Scotland. My daughter, Ann Marie, was also one of the last students attending Halsey before decommissioning. Perhaps next summer my daughter and I will make a journey (via military hops) over to Lakenheath and then north to Scotland by rail.

Comments:I'm so glad that so many people had fun in my homeland while so far from their's. I glad to say that I'm not a second class citizen and was never made to feel that way by anyone sent there. I'm also very happy to know that the very few who think that a reunion is a sham will not be in attendance as we don't need you there!!! I married a wonderful sailor 11 years ago and have 2 beautiful children and am proud to say I belong to 2 great countries and can enjoy reading all the nice things everyone has to say about my home. I hope all who can go to the reunion have the best time ever and can keep the memories alive and kicking, 'cause there's no better place for a party, just wish I could be there too. I'm going home next year to see my family, but it won't be the same without the base and the people that were there. Remember that at least 95.5% of the Americans sent there in some way were coming home and we'll always have a place for you here, you all made memories for us too. God Speed.

If any of you remember the BEES, we built the new galley while there. I was with NMCB Three. I have many fond memories of the area and the people, by far the best duty I pulled anywhere. I was surprised to hear that the base closed. Any body remember Tracey Bullock, Annie Hare, how about Derian, or Marine Aaron Moore, or the blonde named Mary that cut hair in the barber shop? Getting up early the next morning to watch the telly and see the first steps on the moon. For weeks afterwards, people would stop my wife and I on the street and ask if we were American, Then they would just say "Congratulations!" Was on the mid watch when the Peublo was attacked. Spend 22 years in the service, retiring in 1987 as an AGCS. Served all but one tour of my career with the SECGRU at Ft. Meade, Hawaii, Guam, and SUSLO. Look forward to hearing from anyone who remembers. Think I have some great old photos of the base and the area. Will have to go dig them out. Does anyone remember the photo of a rainbow that looked like it was coming down in the middle of the array? Till later, Ernie

I thought it was a fine place, but the lovely scenery and nice folks was spoiled by the presence of so many Americans who simply sat on their behinds and didn't do or see any of Scatland. The ones who did get away from the TV treated the locals like second class citizens. Shame on you. This reunion is nostalgic sham, like Disneyland treatment of the scattish people.

Was reviewing personal photos recently; so many wonderful memories - panoramic view of Auchinblae taken from "Gilbert Hill" above the village - the old "Smithie's" house on High Street where we lived, our landlady Elizabeth "Bessie" Masson, and the Davidson Family (Hugh, Doreen, daughter Fiona and son Ralph) who owned and operated Kobe House, best B&B in Scotland. My personal dream is to return with my youngest son, Iain William, (b.12/29/66 in Aberdeen) to show his the country where he was born. Still searching for Zane and Sandy Gray, (from New Mexico).

Comments:Just wanted to let all who were expecting to see us at the reunion know Sandy and I will not be attending the reunion after all. We flew to St.Louis on May 31,and then drove to Quincy, IL to attend my youngest nephews wedding the following day. On the evening of May 31, after attending the rehearsal dinner, I had to rush Sandy to the local hospital with excrutiating pains in her back and her chest, with the pain radiating up through her neck. I immediately thought heart attack but we were luckier then that. Sandy ended up being diagnosed with Bilateral Pulmonary Embolisms (blood clots in both lungs). She was hospitalized for 4 1/2 days before the doctors gave us the okay to drive back to St Louis and fly back home. But she is grounded for at least a year, no long flights and no long trips (driving). So there goes the reunion trip. She is on 6MGs of COUMADIN a day now to thin her blood so that it reaches between 2.0 and 3.0 on whatever scale they use. She has to have her blood checked at least once a week. Last Friday she was only at 1.9 so her dosage was increased to 6MGs a day instead of 4MGs one day and 6MGs the next. Talk about a scare, I really thought I was going to lose her. All the tests and cat scans have come back positive. All the doctors involved, including an emergency room internal specialists in Quincy and a hemetologist here, state there is no obvioius reason why it happened unless it was brought on by using PREMPRO for the last three years. Normally clots will start in the legs and migrate somewhere else -- quite often the brain or the heart. She was lucky her's went to the lungs. So we stop to realize we are in our late 50's, act like it but do not vegetate. She is back to work full-time now but tires easily when she does anything strenuous; plus this lousy weather we are having now makes it hard for her to breathe when she is outside. Its all going to take time and she needs to realize this fact. No more British' "Get up and work it off" for her. Sorry to take up so much space, as well as put gloom and doom on such a wonderful site, but thought this was the easiest way to let everyone know. I'll deal with further questions on an individual basis. Dolie

I made alot of friends and fond memories. My dad, Frank J. Thies, retired when we left. He to missies the base and all the people he made friends with there. He still talks to some like Lt. Kelly. I miss my friends... Stephanie Jenson and many more. To many to mention. I hope that if someone that I once knew is reading this that they will try to contact me somehow. Since my dad and I left, we worried that they were going to tear down all the housing and buildings. The only pictures I have are from one of the many Christmas' without snow! lol! None of the housing or any of my friends. It bugs me not to know what happened to the school, W.F. Halsey. Did it get torn down? Was it sold? If someone reading this knows the answers to my questions please email me. Well I am entering the 9th grade now and my 14th birthday is coming up. Well g2g!

Comments:I just spent several hours reading the Guest Book entries. Such memories! We really did see the world, but Scotland was a shining memory above almost all the rest. I remember feeding the swans in Loch Wee in the middle of the night, working as a waitress at the EM/Chief's Club, getting "Quarters of the Month" at 40 Denstrath, my daughter setting the house on fire and our big old part Scottish wildcat, Kit Kat who patrolled the housing area (He died at age 18 on Guam) Oh, and my brother (Bob VanLaer) moving to Scotland and tending bar at the club and nobody believing he was really my brother. I wonder if the swirled ceiling is still in the back bedroom there? Roger was a Mat man and a CTM1 at the time. He retired as a CTMC from the Navy Det. at Ft. Devens, Mass. and we ended up staying in that area. We have lost contact with many military and Scots from our time at Edzell, but have kept in touch with some as well. I wish we could make the reunion but MS has curbed a lot of travel for me. If anyone remembers us, please drop an Email. I tried to send one to Mel and Bonnie Williamson, but the E-mail didn't go.

Comments:My name is Iain Kendall and currently I live on Dewey Court on the Edzell Base, I would say 'Old' base but that makes it sound dead. I am 21 years old and am after some help from your good self. I have lived here for approximately a year and a half now and love it. Not only because of it's beautiful surroundings but because of it's past. I used to visit here in 1995 to go line dancing with my parents and ended up coming down just to be on the base. When we found out the houses were for sale we moved down. Unfortunately the people who bought the housing site are rouges and we have to fight to get the grass cut. The school, Ship Inn both have been without power and heating for five years so you can imagine the state they are in. The kids in the area get bored and vandalise the school and cause trouble in the area. I'm wanting to put together a website capturing how the base looked under USA and UK operations and need photographs of houses, the school and the general area that the base lies on. This I know is a lot to ask but I'm on a mission to salvage what a beautiful site this was and is. Thanks for any help you can supply.

Will be thinking of all of you there. One irony -I live on Montrose Ave here in South Pasadena, Ca., have for the past 18 years. Cheers!

Comments:I was stationed in Scotland from '91 to '93 in Co. B MARSPTBN. Unfortunately, I was too young, drunk, and immature to remember much about it. What I'd give to go back. Maybe someday, I can take my wife and our baby (who's on the way) back there and see those things that I missed while blowing my money on pub crawls. It's really good to see websites like this and reminisce about old friends. God bless you all!!

Have heard few rumors of whats happened to the old base since leaving. If anyone has first hand knowledge of whats up with the old property would love to hear from them. I retired in 94 after 21 and change off the Constellation.

Comments:I am very impressed with this pageand came across it by a strange chance. I work at Sears Service in FL, USA but come from MONTROSE. A trainer from Maytag visited our unit last week and as we conversed, he told me he had been stationed at Edzell . Small world and I was so impressed by his feelings about my home town. He told me about the web sight and I am very impressed and happy that you all thought so much of our little area. Let me take the chance to say hello to any who may remember me and my friend, sheila Paton, especialy Tom Bernowski and friends. Once again, Super job!!!!!

Comments:Signed the guestbook a year or two back, and thought I might sign in again since my old computer was casrept and my email address changed. Was pulled from duty at NSGA Bremerhaven and sent to help open a new facility in Edzell in October of 1960. Stayed there until May of 62. As I recall, I was #17 of the original crew which helped activate the base. After the communications work finally started I spent my time "chasing ditties" in an old hangar bldg not far from the barracks. After 6 years as a CT, I converted to RM and spent the remainder of my career as a "fleet sailor" retiring as RMC in Oct of 83. My time at Edzell was a unique and thoroughly enjoyable experience and occupies a special place in my heart. Will keep in touch from time to time. Good to see some names in the guestbook which I remember from those days.

Comments:It's been a while since I visited the site and realized I was in desperate need of updating my info. Since I last wrote, I left the Pentagon and am now in Southern California getting sunburned incessantly. I never had a car so I used to do a significant amount of cycling from the Clatterin Brig to Invermark to Auchenblae (sp?). I'm going on year 12 of wearing a salad suit and Edzell is still my favorite duty station. Lastly, are there any sites in which I can find Royal Navy folks who were at Edzell? Any information would greatly help. Thanks

Would love to here from any who are out there. We just returned from a visit to Scotland. Dropped by the old base and it was very sad to see how it is today. Retired from the navy in 1972.
