To all of you who fondly remember the strange Scottish weather - we've just enjoyed a very pleasant few days with the temperature in the 70's (this is SCOTLAND!!) and have had the kids paddling pool out, watered the lawn several times lately NO RAIN FOR WEEKS and for dinner tonight we even had a BBQ! How long can it last? Maybe tomorrow the Easter Bunny won't need to wear thermals and deliver the Eggs by sliegh. Once again have a great Holiday lol THE MASTERTONS

Comments: Edzell from 1975 - 1979 (Wizard). Without question, it was the highlight (and that includes some pretty classic duty stations, too ... no pun intended). Scanning the guestbook entries, it is clear that the magic of Edzell touched hundreds, perhaps thousands, of us. I still wear my kilt, still play my 'pipes (terrifying my Sassenach neighbors ... but what the hell) and modestly confess to having a somewhat robust collection of single malts ... the levels of which vary at any given time. If there are any survivors out there of that time frame, who may or may not have a bill outstanding at any of a number of great pubs, gimme a shout.

I'd love to hear from anyone who shared the Edzell experience at the time. Looking for Gordon Wolfram, Mark Peacor, John Ross, and other guys I lost touch with. I spent a lot of time at the Harris family's house: Master Chief Cordell H. (Harry), his wife Betty, and Celia, Jeff, Jennifer, and cat Elmo. Got to see a lot of the country, the highlands, Loch Ness, Edinburgh, etc. But the most beautiful sight was going through the "Blue Door" which led to the path along the River Esk. I wonder if the path by the river is still as pristine and awe-inspiring as it was 30 years ago.

Been in touch via email w/ several Scots I was friends with. Lost touch w/ most people I served with. Sorry to hear they closed the base. It was an experience that will remain forever. Comments: I was stationed at Edzell in the early to mid-80s and then married a fellow Navy CT stationed also at Edzell. He still had a few years left in his enlistment and so I stayed in Scotland while he finished his tour of duty. My overall impression with Scotland was that it was a bit wet (I swear there was a summer where it rained constantly) to say the least. I still have a postcard that shows a car crossing over from England to Scotland depicting a gale force wind greeting the tourist. However, my most fondest memory is of the first day I drove out of Aberdeen heading toward Edzell on a beautiful April day and was very impressed with the sight of the daffodils lining the river and the brilliant blue sky. Then, like I said before it commenced raining for the next six months.

Left Scotland on Friday the 13th and made it back to the states just fine. In 91 I started working at NRL and met up with many people from the Winter Harbor/Edzell days. It was fun to go to work and see familiar faces that you hadn't seen in a long time! Divorced now. Remarried and live in Montana on 5,000 acres and enjoy the heck out of it! e-mails are always welcome! Janet

Comments: My wife and I were stationed at Edzell from January 4, 1984 to January 1988. We arrived at Aberdeen airport just as it began snowing and it turned into the biggest blizzard in Edzell in years! The base lost power for three days! We lived in the stone cottage (Bogside Cottage) with the slate roof and the big "shed type" dormer on the front, just along the road to the village and before you entered the "forest." I was in the Air Force Detachment and didn't get to meet all the sailors there with us, but we knew many and enjoyed our time in Edzell. We maintained occasional contact with some friends in the village for some years, but are now out of touch. We're currently in Culpeper, Virginia and have been since retirement in '93.

Although spent lots of time lifting on the base weightlifting equipment, still had time to get to the Links, Wheel Inn (perth), Tiffany's. Still can't dance but that never really mattered with the Lager and Cider on tap. Has anybody heard from Glenn Goetz or Ira McDaniel or John Lemmons or George Jaramillo lately? We're still living in Pensacola and I'm still working at Lockheed Martin as a graphic artist. Our son, Evan, just turned seven. Julie Lauer (a CTT2 at the time) were married over there, and are still together after all these years. Vaguely remember a lot of great parties, all the friendly people over there. Played a lot of darts when I was there, but haven't picked up a set since. Retired from NSGA Northwest in Jan '94 as a CTMCS. Now in industrial sales in York, PA.

Comments: Hey gang. My friend Lynne Sitkiewicz (formerly Taber) informed me that this site had changed much since my last visit and signing (2 years ago). I was in Edzell from 1970-72 working DF. A few too many rum and cokes have dulled my memory of details, but the memories I have are warm and fuzzy. When I left Pensacola for Edzell, a Chief warned us the 3 out of 4 of us would be married before we got out of Scotland. Well, I barely got out single (Miss you Elaine). My good friend and roommate Doug Dow married a lovely lass he affectionately calls "Dotty". Howard Rawlings died, unfortunately, in an automobile accident and Pat Dooling shipped out early (He saw marriage coming I think, haha). I found Doug and Pat 30 years later and keep in touch with them. I'm single again and doing well with a new career as software engineer working on contract with the Navy at Point Loma in San Diego. I work with a lot of ex chiefs and CTs. I'm sort of a legend because of my Edzell duty (also because of my age, haha). Keep in touch.

Comments: I moved to RAF Edzell in 1963 when I was 8, my Dad was a Marine with Company B. There were about 25 American kids on the base at the time and we all attended Luthermuir School under the direction of the strict and stern Mr. Watson, headmaster. In 1974 my father was XO of Company B. Some of you may remember Capt. Schlapfer and his famous Minnie Winnie motorhome that he and my mom drove all over the country in spite of the gas shortage. I visited them with my six month old son, Bill, in the summer of 1974. A few months later I moved in with them and went to work at the club as a waitress. In August of 1976 I married CTM3Thomas G. Renshaw at Drumtochy Castle. Tom, Bill and I moved into the Neuk Cottage on the Panmure Estate near Gannochy bridge, where we lived until we transferred in the summer of 1978. In February of 1987 we moved back to Edzell and rented the Mill House on the Dalhousie Estate just outside Brechin. Tom was a Chief by this time, and Bill was in 8th grade at Halsey School. I went to work at the Club as the weekend duty manager and I also worked in the deli and the stereo shop. I returned to the states in August of 1988. Would love to connect with some of my old pals, ....hope you are all doing well. I am planning to attend the reunion this August, hope to see you there! Debi Hartley

What a blast reciting Robbie Burns poetry and eating with our knives! In 1975 I returned with my year old son to live with my parents. My dad was Capt Schlapfer, XO of Company B. I worked at the club and in August 1976 I married Tom Renshaw (CTM)at Drumtochy Castle. We lived at the Neuk Cottage 2 on the Panmure Estate between Edzell and the Base. In February of 1987 Tom (now a Chief) Bill and I returned to Edzell. We lived in the Mill House on the Brechin Castle Estate, and I went to work at the club again as the weekend duty manager, sometimes tending bar for functions. Comments: After three wonderful years we left Edzell in November of 1970. Even after Bremerhaven, Sabana Seca and Kamiseya which were all great dutystations Edzell had them beat. Absolutely the best whether youwere a brownbagger or a single hooter. The countryside and historical sites were great. The chow hall had unbeleiveably great food but what really made it great were the Scottish people. Unfortunately most of the older friends we kept in touch with have moved to their final reward. We got the antique furniture and clock collecting bug there and amassed a huge collection. Through the clever swapping of many bottles of bacardi From Jack King in household effects to the shipyard in Glasgow We managed to adjust the weight down to 19,400 pounds. My allotment was 9,400. When it got here in Pa I got a call from Tobyhanna Supply depot. The femal voice on the phone said, " Chief Dembowski, you have a very large shipment here." I knew I would have to pay being 10,000 pounds over weight and waited for the numbers. She jerked me along for a while then identified herself. It was one of my highschool classmates. I didn't have to pay a dime. One very rare Wedgewood pitcher of a coplete Qeensware design set was broken but I din't dare make a claim. Our 15 room Victorian home is full of memories of Scotland and not a day goes by that one object or another doesn't bring to mind some wonderful experience there.

Comments: Manged to [make the long, 8-mile journey from Brechin to Montrose and] get to the Edzell reunion in Montrose, and it was the best thing I could've done! Many thanks to Nick and Vera Bouchey for ambushing us in our Brechin front yard, teaming-up with my wife and shaming my lazy ass into going! Great to see the likes of Harry, Ian, Charlie, Scott, and soooo many others there, and it was absolutely great. And a special thanks to my former C.O., Fred Demech and his lovely wife for putting on such a wonderful event. Yep, still live here, and there are a few of us 'Yanks' still around the area. And nope, the place, though a bit quieter, has not expired since losing the base, and it's still pleasant as ever. Brechin City FC is in the 2nd Division now, and as I live right across the street I get to see 'em often! I work down at MHS near Harrogate, England, nowadays, in Systems Support (no more cable-pullin' for me, baby!) and commute; it's 315 miles each way, each week, but it's worth it, basically because Scotland rules and I couldn't imagine living anywhere else! Someday I'll get back to the U.S., but for now, this is wonderful. Would love to hear from any old friends out there. Love to all, and if ya need anything from Bonnie Scotland, lemme know!

Comments: Just adding an entry to update my e-mail address. Was stationed at Edzell from 87-89....Definitely the Best Tour of my time in the Navy. Hope to go back soon to visit! I also was in a band on the base.....didn't have a name(I don't think......we could have, but I can't remember due to all the Castlemaine XXXX). I think we only played out once, at Jolly's......anyways, if anybody remembers me and feels like e-mailin, give me a shout!

I am going to arrange another trip back soon, the Scottish people are still the most friendly in the world and they sure made us all welcome during the reunion.

Comments: I was born in Montrose during my dad's (MIke McShane) first tour and went back as a "Navy Brat" twice, from '81 -'84 and again from '88 -'91. I frequented the gym and the YAC in the early '80's and the gym and the enlisted club on the later tour. I played in a band on base called Sniper and if anybody can help me find the other guys I'd appreciate it. They were Mike Wilson, Rodney "Snow" McGhee, Pete "Snake" Walsh, Gordon Woods, and Jamey Rutta. If you remember me(or think you might) or even if you were stationed there around the same time e-mail me and maybe we can touch base or help each other out.

Comments: My brother and I got back to Scotland this summer. We stayed two nights in Edzell at the Doune House. This is the best bargain in Scotland. John and Phemie Cameron are gracious hosts and at 19 pounds a night it can't be beat! Closed down the Panmure Arms bar on sat night and headed off to the British Open on Sunday. We played tons of golf including the Old Course at St. Andrews, Royal Troon and North Berwick. For you golfers out there North Berwick is a must. The town is also a hidden jewel. Forget the golf touring companies. You can save a ton doing the trip on the web.

Comments: Hello again, It's been a while since I wrote last. I have been thinking about the time that I worked at MWR, at Edzell from 91 - 94. I would like to get in contact with anyone that I may have worked with at that time. I worked in the MWR office and also in the Library. All is well here in Japan, Mike just retoured here, so we will still be here for a while. I am hoping to go home soon, to see my family and friends in Brechin. Well, if anyone remembers us, please drop me a line!

We shared a place off base in Brechin for about six months. I've since returned to the USA and have been back since 1993. Any help or contacts you can offer would be greatly appreciated. Bob Pitts
