| Comments: | Wow, great to see the website still plugging away even thought I left the Xmas greetings on it till July. Sorry everyone for not updating the site but I finally got a chance. Last time I wrote in December I got engaged. Well in 2 months I will have my 1st baby, a girl named Hanna. I am so excited to have my first child on the way. As for those in the guestbook since I last wrote, it was good to read the names of Brian Stevens, Chad Collins (good job in school), Jason Gagnier (still singing?), Bill Hibbs, Chris Moreno, Chuck Bonelli, Andrea & Jereme Paterson, and Paul Sheffield (weren't those barracks crawls fun). Well the website has the holidays greetings off now, hope I check back in sooner next time. |

| Comments: | What a treat to find this webpage! RAF EDZELL was my first tour of duty after A School in Pensacola and Scotland left a place in my heart that has been unable to be filled by any of the other many countries that I have travelled in. I arrived in April 1970 and left in November 1971 and MOST of my free time was spent out roaming the hills and the highland glens. I was an O-Brancher in 50 DIV, finishing up my duty as Tech Control, training under Tim Neary and handing off the reins to a jarhead named Tim Jackson when I left. Cal Spencer was my supervisor and worked with Marshall Simpson, Jeff "JJ" Bales, Andy Hughes and Bill Stevenson. Best buddies were John Trapp, Jim McPhee, Bob Zackierzewski, Andy Shultz, Roger and Janice James, Dan Flanders, Don Potts, Randy Hatfield, Gene Williams, John Flynn, Jim Gant, Cliff Ussery, Roy Bowers, John Stone, Joe Seymour, Cullen Fisher, Larry Mahoney, Ed "Bama" Brasher, Joe Busby, Larry Burnett, RC Cummings, Jim Crook, Bob Oerline and many others who's names escape me right now. Played on the flag football team the year 50 Divison beat the Jarheads in the championship. Also played on base soccer team against St. James Football Club from Hartlepoole, the home town of Chief Ron ONeil's wife, Linda. I have stayed in touch with their coach, Bobby Sweeting, for the past 34 years and visited his home on several occasstion. For my 19th birthday, John Trapp and I bought a rubber raft and rafted down the North Esk River and we travelled for a month through Europe in the Spring of 1971. I returned to visit Edzell in 1975 and have plans to return with my wife in the near future. Got out of Navy in 1973 after a tour in San Miguel, PI, went to college and then medical school, joining the Army Reserves while in medical school in 1982. I've been in the USAR since then and have reached rank of Colonel in the Medical Corps. Deployed for Desert Storm, Bosnia, Kosovo and OEF, just returning from a year in the Horn of Africa last October. Married to Peg, two sons, John and Stevie, and two grandchildren, Tenley and Brodey. Working as an ER doc and ride Harleys with my wife every chance we get. Live in Loudonville, OH. Would love to hear from any of old Ezell buddies. God bless you all!! |

We have still kept in contact with some of the closest friends that we made on that glorious Isle. I wish the US Navy could get stationed there still. It was a great place to raise a child. Our son was born in Dundee, and I wish all my kids were born there. Some of the best years of my life and my wife's life were spent there. I LOVE EDZELL SCOTLAND!!!!!! |

| Comments: | CTT-2 WEO analyst; I only realized much later how remarkable the experiences with the local people (women) and their remarkable countryside (pubs) contributed so much of my growth as an person. I don't know how I escaped re-enlisting, getting married, buying a Volkswagen or being sent to Adak.It didn't occur to me counterpart whether sailor or marine were wonder how I survived numerous misadventures snaking around the country roads on a 1959 BSA 500 motorcycle on my way to the homes of 'unsuspecting' women from Montrose, Brechin, Aberdeen, Arbroath, Forfar, Marykirk, Laurenckirk, Fettercairn, Luthermuir and Anhall. Little did I realize how precious and all too brief was my tiime in the heather. |

| Comments: | I spent 2 1/2 of the best years of my life at RAF Edzell. I re-enlisted just to get orders to Scotland! Living there was a dream come true. I have many, many wonderful memories of the base and I was heartbroken to learn that the base had closed. It was a great base with so much to do. I remember going to the movie theater, Baskin-Robbins, the deli, the Exchange, and the club - just to mention a few things. I made some great friends and have managed to keep in touch with a couple of them (Beth Hickman, where are you??). It was a great walk to the town of Edzell to go to the Glen Esk or the Panmure for drinks and dinner or a game of darts or just to walk around. It was easy getting around on Britrail to Brechin, Montrose, Edinburgh, or Aberdeen. I miss it so much! |

Great memories including a great softball team. Chief Darter was our pitcher and I caught. I expect one day to see someone selling one of those bright red RAF Edzell uniforms on ebay!! I ran special services and ordered 12 different softball bats and twelve dozen were shipped to the base in error. I think 144 bats were well distributed throughout Angus County. Any folks out there who participated in the 1965 Braemar Games ?? |

As for the base itself it has been basicaly left to rot, with the exception of the guard room and runway everything else has been left to rot! Also sadly the Ships Inn wher I spend many a good time, has been converted into flats and is now a shaddow of its former self. Returning back to the base, the bunker where the main operations where conducted is now flooded with 3ft of water. Overall the place is now a wreck by comparision to when you guys left. If you ever have the urge to revisit this site I would strongly recommend that you don't as it would bring a tear to your eye, it certenly does for me! Well have a good one guys and if you need further info on the state of RAF Edzell just drop me a line. Private Ruaridh Macleod, Royal Signals |

In the interests of brevity (and not to bore you all to tears!), let me just add my heartfelt "Roger that". Never has a tour or a place had such an impact ... we revisit regularly, still stay in close contact with our Brechin friends, and still play the 'pipes ... to the torment of my neighbors. Seems like a lifetime ago now....I guess it was. I would love to get back to Scotland some day and take a walk in the beautiful countryside, and maybe hear some bagpipes playing in the distance. | Comments: | Many fond memories of Edzell and still have friends in the area. My family lived in the village 91 - 97 and my step mother Joyce Townsley (Joyce Running pre 91) taught at Halsey school. My sister - MaryAnn and my brothers Michael and Jeremy all attended the school at some point between 86 and 95. As a native Scot I was always fascinated by the difference in culture, and how when you stepped through the security gate it was like entering a different world. A cinema showing movies that wouldn't be released for months in the UK, US dollars, weird big cars, the smell of popcorn outside the gym hall? and of course how cheap things were, especially the beer when I was old enough to buy it! All of the above I loved. And I guess the things I took for granted, the Angus scenery, local people, the culture and even the weather? Were the things that those stationed at Edzell appreciated the most. It's funny how this mutual appreciation can foster so many fond memories and friendships. My family are now in in various parts of the US and the UK. Cheers Joe |

| Comments: | The Marine Corps League is in the UK and is looking for former/retired Marines! Marines, my name is Richard MacDonald, I served in the USMCR from 1990-94. I am Scottish and returned to Scotland nine years ago. I attended MSB Company B's 220th Birthday Ball in Forfar in 1995 shortly before Edzell was disbanded and that was the last time I shook hands with US Marines in the UK until I stumbled across a Marine Corps League chapter in London. Our MCL Det has established ties with Company G, MCSB, at RAF Menwith Hill and we have toured the base and attended their 229th Birthday Ball last weekend. The purpose of this email is to find out if there are any former or retired Marines or Navy personnel still living in the Dundee/Angus region, Scotland or the UK. If so please drop me a line and please join our merry band! Here's the recruiting speil: "The Marine Corps League was founded in 1923 and chartered by an Act of Congress in 1937. Detachment 1088 is one of the few MCL detachments outside the United States and is based in London, drawing its regular membership from active duty, reserve, retired and honourably discharged former US Marines now living throughout the United Kingdom, Europe and America. The detachment also has a strong associate membership drawn from the Royal Marines Association as well as from other suitably qualified individuals. Our quarterly meetings are held at various locations to coincide with planned activities; these include the annual Marine Corps Ball, charity events at the London Embassy, trips both throughout the UK and to US Marine WWI battlefields in France, as well as Royal Marines Association events. The Detachment actively seeks and welcomes regular and associate membership applications, as well as dual-detachment applications from current MCL members stateside. For further details regarding Det 1088, membership benefits, the Marine Corps League, or for all other enquiries, please use the contact details below. Senior Vice Commandant Mike Allen MCL London Detachment 1088 2 Pednormead End, Old Chesham, Buckinghamshire, HP5 2JS, United Kingdom Tel: 01494 772 379 (Int'l: 44 1494 772 379) mcllondon.1088@ntlworld.com www.mcleague.org" Please pass this message on, we have four members in Scotland, but I know there's more of us about. | Comments: | Many memories come to mind when thinking of Edzell. I think that was probably the absolute best duty station the U.S. Navy ever had. I especially remember the hunting and fishing while there. It paid to get to know the Scots. I don't think I ever met one that wasn't friendly and wouldn't hesitate to do all he could for you. I enjoyed many days in the heather with my shotgun because I cultivated friendships with them. One of these days, I hope to return to Edzell and see the changes of the last thirty years. |

| Comments: | What an amazing afternoon this turned out to be. In an effort to obtain a detailed description of the communication training I received at Pensacola, I started digging around on the net. One thing led to another and I ended up back in Edzell. RAF Edzell was my home from July '71 to July '72 - one of the best years of my life. Absolutely magical, especially for a street kid from Chicago. What a joy the locals were; talk about warmth. After adjusting to their attitude and pace, what a shock it was coming home. I was an 'R' brancher who ended up in Direction Finding, Division 35. I just dug into my old Navy memoirs and came up with a Tartan Log fom Dec. 1971 (in case anyone is interested). Actually, I think I'll see if there is somewhere to scan it in for all look over. I have a request: Can any of you help me get a full blown official (if possible) description of the CTR training program that was running back in January 1971? I am trying to get some college credit for military schooling but no institution seems to be able to reconcile my DD214 school codes, hence cannot translate into college. Even though I was honorman in my class I can't remember anything I learned or did other than hacking ditties! (I guess that's all I was good at). But I thought there might have been a reasonable amount of Russian geography / history that was part of the schooling. If so, I might be able to get credit for social studies requirements that still need to be satisfied, but I'd need to prove that somehow. I'm trying to get to the Masters Program but still need to finish up a few BA requirements in a hurry. If anyone can help, I would greatly appreciate anything you have(don't be shy, it might be just the ticket) but even if you can't I'd enjoy hearing from you, especially if you are from the same Edzell era. Tks in advance - phil |

Fortunately, wild and crazy shipmate and fellow maintenance man, John Porter, has some great pictures from our era, so the homepage above is actually John's homepage. I contributed a couple of photos including one of me trying to practice golfing in the fog. Joe Klopp and I were real hackers who actually (played?) several times at Edzell. | Comments: | Was only at Edzel from May-November 1972, but it was a memorable experience. As senior(?) CTM2, I headed up a 5-man mat crew from NSEF, Washington, DC, that removed a buncha gear from Bremerhaven, then installed it in Edzel. Despite a hard-to-deal-with civvie engineer and long 7-day-a-week hours, I wouldn't trade those 5+ mos. for anything. Met a lotta nice guys at the station, plus the most pleasant and warm locals I've ever been around, stateside or abroad. Unfortunately, my memory ain't what it used to be, and I can remember very few names: Paul Aubie, Steve Pike, Bob somebody who kept buying and crashing used Rolls, "Albert" Schweitzer, Curt Williams, Doris Hood (Ahh, Doris...). Got out at DC CommSta in 1973 (It's gone too now, I understand.) If they'd have guaranteed me two more years in Edzel, I'd have re-upped--and probably never met my lovely wife nor had my two beautiful children. I know it's a long shot, but if anybody happens to remember me, I'd sure like to hear from you. If you were stationed in Edzel, God surely loved you! |

| Comments: | Just found several sites for former CT's and thought I would try to restore some lost memory cells - especially for the days in Edzell. I was a CTA1 and worked: 3/63-10/63 Ran the Personnel Office 11/63-4/64 Ran the SSO office (clearances, ARFCOS) 4/64-9/64 Admin desk in P&R Section I would especially like to hear from anyone who remembers any of the following: - coming back from liberty and saying, 'You're not going to believe this, but....' - partying at the C&H (House rented in Aberdeen by me and Paul Hickin) - scratch league bowling - Name of my division officer who coached the Edzell baseball team who, as I was home plate umpire, I threw out of the game for arguing strike calls (boy, was he mad!) - Sarah Sime and the other art and 'dough' school students I noticed that many who sign this book say it was their greatest tour ever. With me that would be an understatement. Can't believe I missed the 2002 reunion. When's the next one? |

| Comments: | My year stationed at RAF Edzell was a truly memoriable one. I enjoyed the people, the work (really), the locals were wonderful, and I fell in love daily with the Scottish girls. I lost several roommates to marriage during that year. I enjoyed the bun lady, the stitch lady, the barber, the inspections, the snow, the Friday night dances at the EM Club, the movies, the Tally-Ho; stacking thrupnees and playing darts. Traveling throught the UK and Europe, wish I had done more. I was on the base honor guard, I carried the British flag. I took part in all the sports: flag football, softball, basketball, volleyball, etc. The highest I got on the golf ladder was 9th, I think. I played all the courses in the area and really enjoyed interacting with the locals. I recently re-aquainted with Norman Marocco (retired CTC) via the net. He and I attended the annual military conference of Catholic men in Germany together in '67. I passed the CT2 test twice that year, but wouldn't extend to get it. The CO made me a very generous offer to re-up, but I returned home to LA, went to work for Texaco's La. Refinery in '68, married my bride of 31 years,Iva, in '73, and our son Tate was born in '78. I retired after 34 years on Jan.1,2002 and Iva joined me 5 months later. We enjoy our friends and family, do volunteer work, travel, etc. If you recongnize me, I would like to hear from you. Two more sites you may want to go look at are: http://www.anzwers.org/free/navyscpo/index.html and http://www.usncva.org/ God bless, Randy! |

| Comments: | I was stationed at Edzell from Feb. 1967 to June 1968. I had a very interesting tour there. We spent most of our liberty time in Montrose. I went back there during college in 1971. The current guys told me that most of them went to Brechin instead of Montrose. Sorry to hear the base is closed now. It holds wonderful memories for me. |

| Comments: | Was stationed in Edzell '63-'65. Started out in the "Hanger" ops bldg (No water) and was lucky enough to open the new Wullenweber building. I was a T-Bird in 32 Div (RP). Returned in 2002 for the reunion and had a great time. We need another one soon. I drove the old roads again from Montrose to the base and I wonder how I'm still alive. Were starting a new guestbook section and would like to hear from any "old" shipmates and/or friends. |
