Free food and 1965 prices plus free non-alcoholic drinks were the order of the day for the small but enthusiastic crowd that attended the event. Everyone there received a certificate which stated, in part, that they contributed significantly to the closing down of the clubs by ensuring that no ale or spirits remained (actually, they gave it one hell of a try but unfortunately we still had lots of demon rum left after that night). We also had some T-shirts printed with the certificate embossed on the front which we raffled off throughout the evening. It was a sad day, especially for those of us there who remember when the Gangway Club first opened back in the mid 60's (Helen Massie, who was there and who should know, informs me that the exact date was 4 July, 1965 - so the Gangway Club was open just a few days shy of 32 years - during which time I calculate we served over 2 million bottles of beer and over 1.7 million mixed drinks - ball park figures, of course). A sad day, yes, but I'm sure that all the old Edzell shipmates will be happy to know that we went out with a bang. |
