CHOKING BACK THE TEARS AT FAREWELL

One of RAF Edzell's best known personalities yesterday wept as the US forces marked the end of 36 years at the top-secret base. Bobby Campbell, who retired from his post as an MoD policeman at the installation earlier this year, was choked as a US Navy colour guard paraded for one of the last times and musicians of the band of the RAF Regiment added their own sombre note. He walked thousands of miles and raised thousands of pounds for charities while working at the base. He was made an MBE in the Queen's New Year Honours List for his efforts. After hearing the US Navy accolades for the area they served in , he paid his own tribute to the Americans. "The tears were running down my face during the ceremony, because it is an emotional time for people fortunate to have been involved with the base," he said. "I have made a great many friends here and would say if it was not for them I would not have been able to help the good causes I have over the years. "I reckon about 80,000 pounds sterling for my charity walks has come from the pockets of the people here - that's on top of what they raise themselves for their own charities. Their generosity knows no bounds." Mr. Campbell, of Brechin, spent 12 years at the military facility and said a great community was built up in and around it. He added, "It is so sad to see them go and this ceremony makes it even more final. I just thank them for all their support."
